For campers in grades 5 - 6, Coastal Camp aims to promote an understanding of the interconnections in our natural world. Through adventure, games and investigations, we continue to foster environmental literacy and create a space where fun and learning meet. Coastal Camp staff will determine the activities for the week based on their passions and areas of study, as well as the interests & abilities of the campers in their group. No two days are ever exactly the same at Coastal Camp! We strive to inspire a love of nature and teach kids how to be environmental stewards in their own lives. All of our camp weeks will include hikes, arts & crafts, story time, beach exploration, and time in our engaging lab spaces.
Our 5th - 6th campers are always up for even more adventure, so in addition to diving deep into our awesome lab spaces, they’ll participate in at least one challenge hike to Hawk Hill, Black Sands Beach, or Hill 88!
Our camp groups are divided by grade, based on the grade your child will be entering in Fall 2026.

Learn about the plants, animals, and history of the Headlands at Junior Rangers week! Our campers will learn how to use natural and outdoor resources to become more confident on the trails. We’ll visit the military batteries, and learn about the relationship between indigenous land use, military history, and current National Park practices.
Junior Rangers camp is the perfect camp for the kids who love plants and animals, hiking through all the trails of the Headlands, and learning about what makes this area so special. Our 3rd - 6th grade campers will get to take a tour of the Headlands stables and meet the horses that call this area home! They’ll learn from real NPS rangers, help with projects at the Native Plant nursery, and even check out a Nike missile site!

Explore the wonders of the underwater world at Coastal Camp! All of our campers will become marine biologists, exploring the shallows of tide pools all the way to the deepest depths. Get ready to learn all about special adaptations needed to survive the ocean, spend time visiting the critters in the intertidal lab, and explore the rainbow sand of Rodeo Beach!
Marine Biology takes center stage during our Ocean Connections weeks. Campers will explore tide pools both outside and in our intertidal lab, learn about the coolest ocean adaptations through a squid dissection, and even explore the microscopic world of oceanic plankton!
On Thursday of Ocean Connections weeks, our 3rd - 6th grade campers will participate in a half day of sailing on the Matthew Turner in Sausalito. The other half of the day away from the Headlands will be spent exploring the Bay Model and playing at Schoonmaker Beach. This day is often a highlight for our campers, and an unforgettable day of memories for campers & staff alike!

Budding artists and nature enthusiasts alike will love Art & Adventure week at Coastal Camp! Campers will create fun art projects with natural materials and MOOP (matter out of place) found around the park. They’ll learn to build natural shelters, master the basics of wilderness first aid, and learn how to safely spend time in the outdoors. Campers will even practice identifying wild edible plants, and the bravest campers can even give them a taste! Through a combination of science and storytelling, campers will find a deep connection to the natural world and the land stewards that came before us.
